Intellectual property (IP) offices and organizations worldwide are uniting under the theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment” to address systemic barriers and expand access to opportunities and resources within the IP system. We recognize that securing IP rights, advancing equality, and fostering empowerment for women is vital to creating a future where everyone’s contributions drive progress, innovation, and meaningful societal change. As highlighted by the World Bank, creating opportunities to advance women’s participation in the workforce could increase global GDP by 20%. However, women are still underrepresented in IP. For example, in 2024, female inventors were five times less likely than male inventors to be listed on international patent applications. This underrepresentation extends to design applications and copyright registrations. These statistics underscore the urgent need for focused efforts — both strategic and financial — to address the disparities and push for greater equality and empowerment. By exchanging good practices on strategies and action plans implemented by other countries and global organizations, we can be inspired to adopt our own transformative approaches. These strategies are designed to close existing gaps, spark meaningful change, and empower women and girls to lead the way in driving transformation within the IP space and beyond. We commit to supporting women in securing IP rights by promoting education initiatives so they can access and utilize the benefits of their IP effectively. We will support initiatives to provide all with clear, accessible information on how IP rights can protect their innovations and creations and contribute to their economic empowerment. Advancing equality in innovation and IP requires measurable actions to identify and address disparities. We recognize the importance of collecting data related to women’s participation in the IP system. When applicable, we are committed to sharing these results and research on women’s participation in IP with policymakers, governments, community leaders, and other key stakeholders to inspire actionable change and foster support for women in the innovation space. To foster empowerment, we are committed to continuing to connect women and girls with experts or providing them with an opportunity to be an expert, equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to thrive as innovators and leaders in the IP system. Mentorship programs can create supportive environments where women can develop their potential, build strong networks, and gain the guidance necessary to succeed in IP-related fields. We recognize the importance of collaboration in creating an inclusive innovation ecosystem and remain committed to fostering change. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we encourage everyone — other offices, governments, organizations, and individuals—to join us in taking actions. Together, we can create a future where every woman and girl can lead, innovate, and shape the world through IP rights, equality, and empowerment.
