EUIPO celebrates Europe Day with the people of Alicante
On 9 May, the EUIPO proudly marked Europe Day by joining forces with the people of Alicante to celebrate peace, unity and European values in the heart of the city. The event, held at the ADDA Concert Hall, brought together around 1200 attendees for a vibrant and joyful celebration.
Europe Day commemorates the Schuman Declaration of 1950, which laid the foundation for today’s European Union (EU). As part of the EU, the EUIPO plays an active role in supporting the EU’s Single Market. By registering trade marks, designs and craft and industrial Geographical Indications (GIs) valid across all 27 EU Member States, the Office helps businesses of all sizes protect their innovations, gain legal certainty, and scale across borders – fostering competitiveness, growth and fair competition within the internal market.
The evening concert at the ADDA, open to the public and supported by the Diputación de Alicante, was the highlight of the celebrations. It featured performances by talented local musicians, including a moving rendition of Ravel’s Boléro in honour of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The concert was attended by representatives of the EUIPO, local authorities, and members of the public from across the region.
To mark the occasion, some of Alicante’s most representative landmarks – including the EUIPO headquarters, Casa Mediterráneo, Palacio de la Diputación, Luceros and the Castillo de Santa Bárbara — were illuminated in blue, the colour of the European Union, symbolising unity and peace.
As part of the wider Europe Day programme, a beach volleyball tournament will take place on 17 May. Organised in collaboration with local organisations, the sports event will bring together teams made up of EUIPO staff and members of the public. It symbolises the Office’s commitment to community engagement and its strong bond with the people of Alicante.
"Europe Day is an opportunity to celebrate what brings us together. It’s also a chance to reflect on the values we share as Europeans: cooperation, innovation, and solidarity,” said João Negrão, Executive Director of the EUIPO.
The EUIPO thanks all participants and partners for making this year’s Europe Day celebration in Alicante such a memorable occasion – and looks forward to continuing the celebrations with the upcoming beach volleyball tournament.
