KARACHI, June 19, 2025: The Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan (IPO-Pakistan) celebrated the World Intellectual Property Day 2025 in Karachi. While bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders from government, academia, creative industries, and international organizations, the event marked the recognition of IP and the theme for this year i.e. IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP. It highlighted the powerful role of intellectual property (IP) in supporting music, empowering artists, and promoting innovation in the creative economy.

The event opened with a live performance of the National Anthem by the talented NAPA team. Ms. Misbah Khalid, Vice President, welcomed the guests, followed by the key note welcome address by Chairperson of IPO-Pakistan, Ambassador (r) Farukh Amil. He emphasized the importance of IP protection in fostering creativity and economic growth. He highlighted the ever developing technological / AI challenges, stressing that Pakistan had to secure its IP Rights and ownership of its artistic heritage and not allow it be usurped by others. He encouraged especially the young creators to take financially empowering ownership of their ideas and works:

“Know your music, know your film, know your IP rights. It’s yours—own it.”

Mr. Ameed Riaz, founding member of COMP, also shared his insights, underscoring the role of technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

The Chief Guest, Mr. Sharjeel Inam Memon, Senior Minister and Member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, appreciated the efforts of IPO-Pakistan and partners for promoting awareness about IP among youth and artists. The Guest of Honor, Ms. Sultana Siddique, Founder of HUM TV, spoke on the vital role of media in nurturing and protecting original content.

Special video messages from Ms. Sylvie Forbin, Deputy Director General of WIPO, and Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO, added a global perspective on the importance of copyright and the creative industries.

The event featured two thought-provoking panel discussions. The first panel, moderated by Ms. Mahwish Hussain, focused on the impact of technology and AI on IP rights in the music and creative industries, while the second panel, moderated by Mr. Syed Nasrullah, explored how IP empowers youth and musicians to secure financial ownership of their creativity.

Distinguished panelists included academics, artists, music producers, and IP experts such as Dr. Kashif Laeeq, Mr. Jawwad Paracha, Mr. Faisal Jalal, Mr. Muhammad Ali Sheikh, and Ms. Umnia J. Iftikhar. They shared their experiences and strategies for navigating the evolving IP landscape.

Live musical performances by the NAPA were interpretive fusion of heritage, traditional and contemporary music compositions, which enthralled the diverse audience. The team added a dynamic cultural element to the event, reflecting the theme of the celebration and portraying the fusion of IP with cultural vibrance. Guests and contributors were honored with shields and certificates presented by IPO-Pakistan and HUM TV.

The event concluded with closing remarks from Ms. Misbah Khalid, Vice President HUM TV, encouraging sustained collaboration to strengthen Pakistan’s creative industry and knowledge economy.
