This training program was jointly launched by WIPO and UNESCO for laureates of the L'Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards* to strengthen the IP capacity of women scientists in 2018. Since its 7th edition in 2024, KIPO has been co-hosting this international event.
* Each year, the award is presented to five distinguished women scientists (one from each continent) who make outstanding contributions to the advancement of science. The scientific fields considered for the awards alternate every other year between Life Sciences and Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science.
This course provides a venue for prominent women scientists in Korea to actively interact and collaborate with renowned international women scientists including Professor Maria Teresa Dova and Professor Priscilla Baker, laureates* of the 2025 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards.
* Professor Maria Teresa Dova, laureate for Latin America and the Caribbean and Professor Priscilla Baker, laureate for Africa and the Arab States
The KIPO seeks to demonstrate to women scientists that IP is not merely a legal concept but a pivotal tool that unlocks the future of research and development. Through this program, KIPO presents both theoretical perspectives and practical case studies to illustrate the central role of IP. To this end, the curriculum has been structured around themes that directly meet the practical needs of scientists in R&D. This include: △ The roles of IP throughout the entire R&D cycle △ IP Valuation △ Mentorship session with patent attorneys to enhance participants' IP capabilities.
The participants will go on the study visits to Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB) to witness firsthand how research discoveries are translated into real business value. They will join a forum at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) to exchange successful cases of research and IP utilization with Korean professors and students, further consolidating the global science and technology network.
Jae-woo HEO, dean of the IIPTI of the KIPO expressed that this course provides an opportunity for women scientists to strengthen their IP capabilities, thereby utilizing IP in their research and development activities. Mr. HEO stated that the KIPO will continue to work closely with international organizations such as WIPO and UNESCO in order to promote the global valuation of IP and to further solidify Korea's status as a global leader in the IP field.
