ISLAMABAD, November 17, 2025: Pakistan Institute of Trade and Development (PITAD), in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva, organized a 5-day inaugural “Masterclass on Intellectual Property for Diplomats and Trade Officers”.

The event was inaugurated by the Secretary, Commerce, Mr. Jawad Paul. He underscored the centrality of IP in the modern economy, which is based on innovation and knowledge. DG PITAD, Ms. Shazia Adnan, stated that this collaboration with WIPO Academy and Foreign Service Academy was a strategic partnership that would lead to improved strategic policy formulation and positive outcomes. Mr. Mohamed Abderraouf Bidioui, Senior Counsellor at WIPO Academy, Geneva, appreciated PITAD’s dedication and efforts. He stressed upon the importance of this workshop for diplomats and the trade officers.

Chairman IPO Pakistan, Farukh Amil, strongly supported DG PITAD for this vital initiative, which was transforming PITAD into a world-class regional training hub. He underscored the importance of the Foreign Ministry working in partnership with the Commerce Ministry to pursue Pakistan’s economic and trade agenda. He stated that all diplomats had to be fully conversant with the modern economy, in which IP played a central role. He reiterated that WIPO should open a dedicated office in Pakistan in order to strengthen the visibility of IP across the country. It was the only major UN agency that was absent in Pakistan. Its presence would have profound multiplier effects from the students & entrepreneurs to the legislators and multinational corporations.
