The Ministry of Intellectual Property (MOIP) announced that it exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Enhanced Cooperation in Intellectual Property with the Philippines' Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on March 3 at Malacanang Palace in Manila, on the occasion of the Republic of Korea-Philippines Summit, in the presence of the two heads of state.
The new MOU further expands the scope and level of cooperation agreed under the previous memorandum signed in 2022 between the Korean Intellectual Property Office and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL). Concluded on the 77th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the MOU also carries symbolic significance in reaffirming their longstanding friendship.
Under the MOU, MOIP and DTI agreed to undertake cooperation in key areas including:
▲ strengthening joint law enforcement against counterfeit goods,
▲ exchanging intellectual property (IP) data, and
▲ improving IP administrative services through the use of artificial intelligence.
On March 4, Minister of Intellectual Property Kim Yong Sun met with IPOPHL Director General Nathaniel Arevalo to discuss the concrete implementation of the MOU and MOIP's participation in the ASEAN Network for Intellectual Property Enforcement Experts (ANIEE), currently chaired by the Philippines.
*ANIEE (ASEAN Network for Intellectual Property Enforcement Experts): an ASEAN task force dedicated to addressing counterfeit goods and online platform infringement.
Minister Kim also held a ministerial-level meeting with Cristina A. Roque, Secretary of the DTI, where they exchanged views on strengthening bilateral cooperation. During the meeting, he expressed an expectation on the Philippines' leading role, as this year's ASEAN Chair country, in expanding IP cooperation between Korea and ASEAN.
Minister Kim stated, "The signing of this MOU on the 77th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and the Philippines will serve as a turning point in expanding our IP cooperation toward the future." He added, "Building on the strong friendship and trust between our two countries, we will continue our effort to strengthen the protection of intellectual property."
