Geneva – Indonesia affirmed its commitment to strengthening intellectual property (IP) cooperation with the BRICS countries at the Informal Meeting of IP BRICS Heads of Office, held on the sidelines of the series of meetings of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) General Assembly on Tuesday, 7 July 2026. The meeting was chaired by India as Chair of IP BRICS and attended by the heads of IP offices from member states and BRICS partners.

The forum served as a venue for IP delegations to exchange policy developments, discuss cooperation projects, and formulate future collaborative steps. India also encouraged the finalization of the calendar of activities and preparations for the Heads of IP Offices meeting scheduled for this coming September.

At the meeting, the Director General of Intellectual Property, Hermansyah Siregar, presented various developments in Indonesia's IP system. These included the deliberation of the Industrial Design Bill, the implementation of the new Patent Law, the evaluation of amendments to the Trademark and Geographical Indications Law, and the finalization of the National Intellectual Property Strategy as a roadmap for national IP development.

"This forum is an opportunity for Indonesia to share its experience while learning best practices from the BRICS countries," said Hermansyah Siregar.

Besides Indonesia, Brazil highlighted the importance of strengthening technical cooperation among IP delegations and is preparing a study on the operational conditions of the IP offices of BRICS members. China presented various initiatives, ranging from media outreach, data exchange and the development of a legal database to cooperation projects in the fields of design and marketing.

Egypt reported on the progress of its National IP Strategy and the establishment of the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority. The country also proposed cooperation in IP-based commercialization and technology transfer, as well as patent examination for the public health sector.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia reported on IP legal reforms, the digitalization of services through e-filing, the development of a national database, and plans for interconnection with the IP offices of BRICS countries. Iran presented the implementation of the Industrial Property Protection Act 2024 and the development of national geographical indications, while Russia presented an IP valuation project and the development of an interactive IP BRICS website.

As a follow-up, all members were asked to provide input on the various cooperation proposals under discussion. Member states will also submit information on their national IP systems to support the development of the IP BRICS website ahead of further discussions at the Heads of IP Offices meeting this coming September.

Through its active participation in the IP BRICS forum, Indonesia continues to strengthen its role in international cooperation in the field of intellectual property. This collaboration is expected to support policy development, enhance institutional capacity, and strengthen the IP protection ecosystem at the global level.
