On 20 October, Brazil’s National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) published recognition of a geographical indication (GI), in the denomination of origin (DO) category, for bee honey from Capanema (Paraná). With this registration INPI reaches 183 recognized GIs: 138 indications of source (137 domestic and one foreign) and 45 denominations of origin (35 domestic and 10 foreign).
According to the documentation, honey production in Capanema is linked to family farming, environmental preservation and organization of the beekeeping sector, strengthened since 2018 through institutional partnerships, technical training and traceability systems. More than 130 beekeepers across rural communities such as Conciolândia, Linha Gaúcha, Santa Clara, Santa Ana, Cristo Rei and São Francisco rely on the activity as an important income source for small rural properties. The distinctiveness of Capanema honey arises from interaction between natural and human factors: proximity to Iguaçu National Park and predominance of native species such as cambará and louro-branco, which give an extremely light colour and a mild sensory profile. These characteristics are preserved by traditional local practices of handling, harvest and processing. Technical-scientific studies by the Federal University of Technology – Paraná (UTFPR) have confirmed the link between the product and the territory.
