LAHORE, 15th July, 2025: The 3rd pilot activity of the Intellectual Property Training Institute (IPTI) of IPO Pakistan was successfully held in Jinnah Auditorium of LCCI under the theme "IP for Business Success." The event brought together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including researchers, entrepreneurs, ORIC and TISC officials, startups, IP experts, and representatives from business community to explore how intellectual property (IP) can drive business growth and innovation.
The session featured a keynote address by the Ambassador (r) Farukh Amil, Chairperson, IPO Pakistan, who highlighted the growing importance of IP education in the country. He deeply appreciated the continued support of WIPO and national stakeholders in the establishment Intellectual Property Training Institute (IPTI) in Pakistan – an initiative that will play a vital role in strengthening IP education, skills and training in Pakistan. The Chairperson also underscored the crucial role of IP in driving Pakistan’s technical advancement and economic growth, stressing that IP should no longer be viewed as a peripheral or secondary subject, but rather as a core element of national development strategies. He further highlighted the importance of joining key international treaties such as the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the Lisbon Agreement on Geographical Indications, and the WIPO Treaty on IP Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge to protect indigenous assets abroad but also attract foreign investment and enhance Pakistan’s credibility on the world stage. The Chairperson spoke at length on the necessity of a tangible enforcement regime, without which IP global standards and IP culture could not be secured.
The Senior Vice President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Shahid Nazir Chaudary also addressed the participants, emphasizing the need for businesses, especially startups and SMEs to understand the strategic value of intellectual property for competitive advantage and long-term success. Ms Aemen Javairia, Director of the Intellectual Property Training Institute (IPTI), underscored the institute’s pivotal role in disseminating intellectual‑property knowledge to stakeholders across Pakistan. Ms. Mariia Bychkovska, Project Support Consultant, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) joined the event virtually and appreciated the establishment of IPTI in Pakistan in her online address. She acknowledged this milestone as a significant step toward strengthening the country’s innovation ecosystem by enhancing local capacity in intellectual property knowledge and skills. She reaffirmed WIPO’s commitment to continue supporting member states in their mission to expand IP awareness and capacity-building efforts.
Subsequently, WIPO certified Master trainers Ms. Shakra Khurshid, Mr. Gulam Mujtaba, Ms. Aonia, and Mr. Saad Nasrullah, delivered comprehensive presentations, sharing practical insights on various forms of IP protection, commercialization, and its effective use as a business strategy. Dr. Owais Shaikh, national consultant IPTI also delivered presentation online covering IP best practices in Business. The training aimed to equip entrepreneurs, inventors, and professionals with the tools needed to secure and leverage their intellectual assets effectively.
In the end, shields and participation certificates were distributed among the participants and speakers. The Chairperson IPO wrapped up the session by thanking all the participants, speakers and partners including WIPO for their valuable contributions and support. he expressed hope that the momentum generated through this session would continue to drive meaningful progress in IP education and capacity building across the country.
